About Aquamarine Gemstone
Aquamarine is the blue-to-blue-green variety of beryl, named from the Latin for "water of the sea" for its clear, serene color, caused by trace iron within the crystal. The most prized aquamarines show a deep, saturated blue reminiscent of Brazil's famous Santa Maria mines, though fine stones are also found in Nigeria, Madagascar and Pakistan. As the birthstone for March, it has long been a popular choice for both jewelry and collecting. At 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, aquamarine is durable and largely free of visible inclusions compared to other beryls like emerald, and most stones are heat-treated only to remove secondary green or yellow tones and bring out their signature blue — a standard, disclosed practice.
