About Peridot Gemstone

Peridot is one of the few gemstones whose color comes from its basic chemistry rather than a trace impurity — the vivid lime-to-olive green of this olivine variety is intrinsic to the mineral itself, giving it a distinctively consistent hue from stone to stone. It has been mined for thousands of years, including from Egypt's St. John's Island, historically called the "Evening Emerald," with modern fine material also coming from Pakistan, Myanmar and Arizona's San Carlos deposits. As the birthstone for August, peridot remains a popular, affordable gemstone for both jewelry and collectors. Rated 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, it should be worn and stored with a little extra care compared to harder stones like sapphire or ruby.
